Short description: The course is aimed to introduce students into the issues of reclamation of technically and hydrologically degraded lands and remediation of contaminated soils. Students work out the simplified projects of open pit reclamation and remediation of sites contaminated with heavy metals.
Full description: Assessment of soil pollution. Remediation of contaminated soils – legal regulations and the main rules of remediation. Reclamation of of technically and hydrologically degraded lands. The choice of future usage of reclaimed lands. More details concerning the course of reclamation for selected special cases, including mining areas and various dumps.

Learning outcomes: Knowledge Students know the methods used for assessment of soil contamination and determination of remediation need, as well as related legal acts. They are aware of various natural, technical and legal conditions that affect the processes of land reclamation; they describe the factors determining the choice of future land use They describe the main causes of land degradation in Poland, as well as the examples of related sites in industrial and mining areas, and know the effects of their reclamation Skills Students are able to interpret and assess the state of soil pollution, indicate the need of remediation and work out the plan of remediation, with considering related legal regulations They make a simplified inventory of technically degraded land (open pit), choose the most suitable category of future land usage and prepare a They describe the main points of reclamation project in a form of presentation, and justify the choice of proposed methods Social competences Students become sensitive to the problems of proper or improper management of natural resources, and are aware of the importance of reclamation of degraded lands. They are able to use rational arguments in favour of environmental protection. They identify properly the problems related to land reclamation. Students have experience in working both independently and in a team, taking on various roles.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: Grade obtained at classes (that involves projects, presentations and written tests): 50% Grade obtained at the exam: 50%
